He currently holds the position of manager for the San Diego Padres in Major League Baseball (MLB) and has earned the prestigious Manager of the Year award on three occasions. Melvin’s journey in baseball began when he was selected in the first round, securing the second overall pick by the Detroit Tigers during the secondary phase of the 1981 draft. He played as a catcher for several MLB teams, including the Detroit Tigers, San Francisco Giants, Baltimore Orioles, Kansas City Royals, Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, and Chicago White Sox. His playing career spanned a decade, from 1985 to 1994. Transitioning to a managerial role, Melvin has guided multiple MLB teams, including the Seattle Mariners from 2003 to 2004, the Arizona Diamondbacks from 2005 to 2009, and the Oakland Athletics from 2011 to 2021.
